Life & Fate
Vasily Grossman
Life & Fate isn’t just about war. It’s about how systems shape people.
Set during the Battle of Stalingrad, the story moves between soldiers, families, and prisoners. But the focus isn’t really the events, it’s how power shows up in everyday life. How fear spreads. How people adapt. How they justify things to themselves.
One of the more unsettling ideas is how similar opposing systems can be. Different ideologies, same patterns. Control doesn’t always look like force — sometimes it’s just pressure, slowly applied.
What stays with you are the small moments. Acts of kindness, honesty, resistance. Nothing dramatic, but enough to push against the system, even slightly.
It’s long and heavy, but not a single word is wasted.
